Chittagong Port officials have said that operations at the port are being seriously affected by a buildup of empty containers at various terminals.
As of the end of February, around 4,700 empty containers were present at the port, an especially high number given its capacity of only 4,545TEU.
While officials have asked operators and shipping agencies to remove the containers, the lines have argued that the port's inadequate container handling abilities are to blame.
In an attempt to clear the congestions, the port will charge double the daily rate to store containers after an initial two-week period.
