Ports of Auckland to shrink its footprint
Ports of Auckland is negotiating with Panuku Development Auckland to sell Port of Onehunga and make for public use.
Ports of Auckland chief executive Tony Gibson said this is because Manukau Harbour is too shallow for modern shipping, making the port at Onehunga unsuitable for freight movements.
Mr Gibson said during past few years Ports of Auckland had been consolidating Onehunga operations at POA’s main port on Waitemata Harbour.
The construction of a new cement import facility at the Waitemata port, to be completed in 2016, is the final phase in the move of freight operations from Onehunga.
Mr Gibson said the company was delighted to be able to open up the land for public use.
“By improving our efficiency we have been able to consolidate our operations, halve our land footprint and still continue to serve Auckland and New Zealand’s growing freight needs,” said Mr Gibson.
He said Ports of Auckland was keeping up with the international trend toward larger ships and evolving to meet Auckland’s growing freight demands while taking up less space.
