Sydney Ports Requirements - Weigh in Motion
To comply with Chain of Responsibility legislation, both Patrick and DP World Terminals have installed weigh in motion load measurement devices at their Sydney terminals which will be used to weigh all import containers being delivered out of their respective terminals to ensure safe axle load limitations of vehicles entering public roads. This initiative is only applicable to import containers ex Sydney terminals. The maximum container weight permitted for road transport for Sydney and within New South Wales is currently 25.5 tons per 20’ and 27.5 tonnes per 40’, including containertare. This is subject to trailer specifications. The weight must also be evenly distributed within the Container.
From June 1st 2012, all import containers must now pass over a weigh bridge located within the port precincts. In the event that a loaded truck is found to exceed the legal gross and/or axle mass, limits will fall into the following categories:
1. Minor 0-5% over allowed mass limits
2. Substantial 5-20% over allowed mass limits
3. Severe 20% over allowed mass limits (Note – any vehicle which is deemed as
falling into the Severe category will NOT be able to leave the terminal, container
will be left at the terminal by the carrier)
Effective June 1st 2012, ANY additional costs incurred as a result of overweight
breaches will be for the account of the Local Consignee nominated on the
through Bill of Lading.
Consignees should ensure their shippers overseas comply with the official weight limits, observing that the manifested weights on bills of lading accurately reflect the actual payloads.
